With the new academic year soon to start, the sales of Laptops, Notebooks, Cameras, iPods and mobile phones reaches one of the biggest peaks of the year, comparable with pre Christmas sales, as students stock up with all the latest gadgets for their new adventure of leaving home for the first time as they head of to University.

Most students are now expected to own a laptop computer by the collage as part of the course, whilst worrying parents insist on the departure of their children is accompanied by the latest mobile phone; a simple trick to make sure the parents can ring their child whenever they want to check they are safe!

Most of new students will head for University halls of residence for the first year of the course. For most of the puples, this will be the first real time they have left home and had to fend and finance for themselves, which for many, this will prove to be a learning curve to say the least.

As the new studyer will be away from home for the first time, along with hundreds of other students, excessive partying is part of the course. There will be plenty of occasions throughout the first year when things will get out of control, especially when alcohol has been involved with young adults who have just found freedom!

Going back ten or twenty years things were roughly the same, except without the modern gadgets like laptops, mobiles and iPods. So when partys continued in the halls of residence after the student bars had shut, but there was not the same sort of valuable items in the students rooms.

The value of things is different today, electronic devices can easily add up to 2000 pounds and that is on the budget side of the market. With all of the potential dangers to these products from excited, partying students, it may well be worth taking out Laptop Insurance that will cover for accidental damage and theft, but make sure water damage is included, as with all the partys, a knocked over bottle of drink could easily destroy a new laptop in seconds!

Now you could check your home contents insurance, as many companies offer ‘an away from home’ type of cover for expensive items, if you consider this method you should be aware of the following two points. Know what the excess fee will be, as is often a lot higher than stand alone policies. The second and important point that is worth knowing about is, if you make a claim on your home contents insurance, will you loose your no claims bonus? and or will the policy renewal premium sky rocket as you have made a claim?

When you make a claim on a stand alone policy the policy will often end after a claim, so you just take out a new policy at the same price.

Mobile Insurance that is a stand alone policy may well be worth a look at as well, but as with the Student Laptop Insurance, it is best to make sure water damage is included within the policy, as some insurance companies exclude liquid damage from the policy. This may sounds a bit strange, but its just the way the insurance business works and manages their liabilitys. So to get cracking value from stand alone Laptop Insurance, check for liquid damage, as students will damage or destroy thousands of electronic gadgets with spilt liquids in the coming term!

A boiler is an important component of a heating system used in homes, buildings, industries and in making hot water. It is the part that contains water and moves heat in the form of steam from a fuel source such as oil, gas or coal to provide warm air. This is often found in hot water heating systems that convert heated water into steam and returns it to the source to be reused when the air gets cooler.

Specifically, a boiler works by burning natural gas, oil or wood pellet to heat water that goes through hot water tubes or cylinders, radiators or underfloor systems. Boilers can be energy efficient if well maintained, properly set up and their insulation intact and sealed well.

In most residential and small commercial applications, boilers can produce hot water at around 160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit which is then circulated throughout the system using a pump. At temperature above 212 degrees Fahrenheit, steam is produced.

Types of boilers

Boilers can be closed or open systems. A closed system refers to one which is able to reuse 100 percent of the steam produced by a boiler. In other words, the energy from the steam is converted back into the form of water to be used again in producing heat. A hot water heating system is an example. On the other hand, an open system is one which does not return the condensate back into the boiler as the process of heating may be a source of contamination.

Boilers also come in two basic types – the firetube and the watertube. In the firetube or shell boilers, the fire or the hot gases are directed through the inner part of the tubes situated within the boiler shell surrounded by water. This design type, which is found in 80 percent of boilers, can produce steam of up to a maximum of 25,000 pounds per hour.

In the watertube, the fire or hot gases are directed to and around the exterior of tubes containing water. The boilers in this type are rectangular in shape and have two or more drums. In the top drum is where steam and water are separated while the lower drum acts as a collection point. When a huge amount of steam is needed, this system is very ideal.

How it works

Boilers operate when fuel is supplied to the burner. Natural gas is supplied through the gas pipe, oil or LPG through a pressurized tank while the wood pellet is blown to the burner. Fuel is then mixed with air and ignited.

The next stage is when the fire from the burner and its combustion gases escapes into the boiler. What follows is the transfer of heat to the water that circulates through the heat exchanger within the boiler.

When water is heated, it then produces warm air around the house via the radiators, under-floor heater and hot water tubes.

Keep in mind that boilers have to be regularly cleaned to make it work for a longer period. As they age, boilers that are not well maintained usually become less efficient.

Here are some tips then to follow. Run your boiler for short periods of time. Also, avoid turning it on and off very often as doing so could affect its system. Leave at least a one-hour interval before switching it on again.

Lately we have seen national driving schools offering lessons for a very cheap price. Is it therefore really possible to make a good living as a driving instructor as the advertising would have us believe?

I believe that there are currently twice as many instructors as there were 4/5 years ago and new pupils wanting to learn to drive are down about 5% over the same period. Very competitive times indeed and offers like those of the national driving schools are indicative of this situation.

Resting on ones laurels is no longer an option and any instructor/driving school needs to be very pro-active if they are to sustain, or dare I say grow, their business. This would include networking, a website for your driving school (not a stale historic site but an evolving, growing site - pupil testimonials is a must), directory listings etc. Yes, it may be a bit of work but, being an independent driving instructor is not a job, it is a business - your business.

Give yourself a competitive advantage whenever you can. I see many listings on the Driving Schools Directory that basically say, as an example:

Towns:
Staines

Additional School Information:
Pleasant & relaxed instructor.

On the application they are encouraged/told to complete ALL towns & villages and not just the principal towns - it is amazing what some people will search for - but they don’t. Staines, Egham, Laleham, Thorpe, Thorpe Lea, Stanwell, Stanwell Village etc. should have been inserted.

Additional info - come on, is that all they really offer? What about some background, track record, pass rates, type of car, why they are different/unique etc. Entice them to make some sort of contact with you.

Like it or not, it is a sales process/advert and prospects are likely to be attracted to a listing that has a little more to say about themselves - prospects are searching for information to make a decision about who to take their driving lessons with - help them make their decision! Don’t rely on them phoning you to start a relationship, you just may not get that far!

I think what I am trying to say here is that I am sure there are better things to compete on other than just price. If everyone did that we as driving instructors may well be registering as charities as part of the training process in the not too distant future.

All parents know that their children are copy-cats. In reality, they mimic so frequently, and so completely, that they are effectively “copying machines”. They imitate what you say, the way in which you express it, and under what conditions you say it. They emulate the style in which you move about, how you act, how you respond to events, how you act toward other people, and just about anything else you do.

But parents also know that every so often, we plan to teach them a specific thing, and they learn something else. For example, you’re attempting to teach them about gardening and how fun it is to cultivate plants, but they discover how to run away when they catch a glimpse of a maggot or a spider, creating a new permanent dread (or simple “severe repugnance”).

The snag is of course that children learn at an exceptional rate. They simply don’t reliably learn what you desire them to learn. And it’s worse because from time to time you don’t appreciate (or don’t even reflect on) what you need your child to learn.

But deciding what you intend your child to understand is not critical when you’re sitting alongside your offspring trying to teach them something. Well, it is important, but it’s evidently at the front of your thoughts. The vital times are when you are not attempting to openly teach your child something, but they are going to discover something nevertheless. It’s at those points that you especially need to be alert to what your child is learning.

For example, if you and your mate are quarrelling about something, and either of you curses and stalks off rather than coping with the arguement sensibly and fairly, what will your child learn? Well, the principal thing they’ll become skilled at is a brand new word, one that you don’t want them shouting in public! The second thing they’re prone to learn is: “when in a spat, storm off rather than coping with it.” Or something like that, anyhow.

So realising that your son is going to learn something in EACH AND EVERY situation they are in is critical. Choosing beforehand what you’d prefer them to discover is something altogether different. And that’s the reason why the most valuable empowering question for parents is: what do I want my child to learn from this?

If you can maintain a question like this in your mind as much as possible, and particularly where you are hugely emotive or reacting from habit, you’ll begin to have a fantastic faculty to have some bearing on your child even more than you do previously. You’ll be able to show them more of how you mean them to behave, in a manner that’s more like you at your best, instead of you at your worst. You’ll be able to congruently say “do what I do AND say”, without worrying so much about your words and behaviour being in accordance. You’ll be able to tell your child as they grow up why you behave like you do, knowing that they’ll already have had years of seeing you act in keeping with your morals and principles.

But… you will only be successful in doing this if you have a key attitude that parents have to have, something that makes this empowering question valuable. Independently, the question is handy, but it’s not the only thing you need.
