Do you have the discipline to set a goal, and stick to it until it’s completed? Do you have the guts to make the hard sacrifices to accomplish your goal? Do you have a goal that you want bad enough? If your answer is “no” to any or all of these questions then your chances of achieving that goal are reduced drastically. In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and say that your chances of success are zero.
My brother and I often trade book recommendations. A Million Bucks By 30, by Alan Corey is my brother’s latest recommendation to me. He was excited about it and said that I should check it out. So, as I often do I immediately went to Barnes and Noble and picked up the book the following day on my lunch break. I quickly thumbed through the book to see how many pages it had, the type setting, and made a mental note to finish the book this weekend. I started and finished today. The book is a page turner. It’s entertaining, simple to read, and it gets the authors point across.
The book is simple. Alan Corey set a goal at 22 years of age. That goal was to be a millionaire by the time he turned 30 years old. What makes the story compelling is the fact that Alan Corey was an average person in most respects. In other words, he had no money, no big time job, no contacts, and no inheritance to help him get a leg up. He started basically from zero. The book basically says, “I did it, so can you!”.Unlike the The 4 Hour Work Week” this book makes the process of achieving financial freedom seem attainable by the average person. I also found the steps well defined in this book. I believe that anyone can actually take this book and use it as roadmap. I don’t think that the same can be said about, The 4 Hour Work Week.Alan’s process is simple:
- Figure out what you like
- Decide on a goal, a big goal
- Set a time frame to complete that goal
- Read and study all the information that you can about your goal
- Remain focused and follow through, making the necessary sacrifices to achieve your goal
- Reward yourself a little along the way to keep from getting burned out
- Reward yourself big when you complete your goal
Corey sums up a secret to his success at the end of every chapter. If you want to really read this book quickly and get just what you need then read the “Alan Corey 101″ at the end of each chapter. That’s where the “beef” is so to speak. At the end of chapter 2 Corey reveals the key to success. He says,
“Confidence is the key to success… Thinking like a millionaire means believing in yourself.”
This is key to accomplishing anything. If you don’t believe it, who will? One of the quotes that hit home for me was a quote that speaks to the Acres of Diamonds lesson. There are some serial searchers of “The Secret” to success, in business, money, and relationships that his quote applies to. I’m guilty of committing the sin of continually looking elsewhere for success when the seeds of it are probably all around me. I’m guilty of buying the next great Internet Marketing Product that will bring me the easy riches. Here’s what Corey has to say in chapter 11 about freeing yourself from this,
“You’re vulnerable to scams only if you don’t know what you want, don’t have a plan, and don’t know how other people who achieved goals similar to your succeeded. Once you know what you want, learn everything you can about the topic, industry, and so forth, and use that knowledge to plot out the steps to get you there. If you do that, no one will be able to distract you by offering the “easy way” out, because you’ll be focused and already know what you need to do to get you where you want to be.”
Do yourself a favor a go out and get this book. Whether you are younger or older than 30. I’m over thirty, but I learned a lot from reading this book. I just want to leave you with one last quote from the book that I really like. This small piece of wisdom is worth the price of the book:
“The key to getting rich (like losing weight) is actually amazingly simple: All you need is focused effort, self-discipline, and the right mind-set. People who stick to a plan and make good daily decisions with regard to that plan end up with amazing results. Those who don’t, or those who cheat themselves, either get no results or, perhaps, even inverse results…. The key to financial success is staying focused on your goal and applying that focus to all your spending decisions.

Hi, Kitwana
I read your book review and can really identify with the review. I think that as entrepreneurs or business owners we become discouraged about the process it takes to become successful or make it rich. We have to continue to move forward at our own pace, be happy with what we have successfully accomplished and rich with being able to continue to do it.

This review makes me want to go and read the book again….
It’s the best review I have read of the book so far. Other ones that I have read focused on the novelty of it. This one discusses the power of the book to have life altering effects and takes it seriously.
When I first read the book I realized that A) I was on the right path and B) I could do a lot more with what I already have access to..
